I think you can buy beer anytime, but liquor stores are closed on Sundays, open like 9a til 11p Mon-Sat. This is how it is in my county, I'm sure others will chime in. Therre are dry counties, none close to Nashville. No beer or liquor is sold in stores or restaurants in Nashville before 11am (or perhaps noon - - thought they changed that law though)on Sundays. Purchasing alcohol in Nashville/Tennessee is very strange, from someone looking in from CA. Since you posted in the Nashville forum, I will comment on the laws in Nashville. Wine and hard liquor, as well as beers over 6% ABW, can only be purchased at a liquor store. (Open from 8am to 11pm. Closed on Sunday and many holidays) Grocery stores are allowed to sell beer "having an alcoholic content of not more than five percent by weight."
Yes, there are MANY counties that are dry. For example, if I'm not mistaken, Moore County and home of Jack Daniels Distillary in Lynchburg is dry of all alcohol. Bob was spot on when he said the alcohol laws here are strange. I just discovered that liquor stores, the only places allowed to sell wine, cannot sell corkscrews. I thought the store clerk was joking, but unfortunately not. I had to go to the beer store next door for the corkscrew. Also, you cannot buy beer after a certain time, I believe 2:00 or 3:00 am, and it may be earlier than that on Saturday night. Yes, Moore County is dry, but the state legislature passed a law that overrides the county ordinance and allows one exception - the Jack Daniels Distillery can now sell small, specially marked commemorative bottles of Jack in their gift shop. Thank you all for replying. We will find a liquor/wine store when we get there on Wednesday. We are not beer drinkers so aren't concerned about that. I did just make a note to pack my corkscrew!!!
One other tip is that if anyone in your group drinks liquor using a favorite mixer, you may want to buy that mixer before you leave. Depending on the liquor/wine store you go to, you may not have a convenience store next door on the same premise. Otherwise you would have to find a convenience store or grocery store and hope they have their brand of mixer.Brands of mixers can be very personal. I have a friend that travels 20 or so miles to Nashville just to purchase a brand of Margarita bottled mixer that he loves and can't buy anywhere else. Are Tennessee's liquor stores private or government owned? I'm assuming that if they're privately owned, there will be more of them and they will be open more hours. We'll be visiting from PA where you have to buy wine and liquors at a state-owned store which are few and far between with limited hours. And very high prices.
