It is one of a number of supermarkets reviewing prices after a Competition and Markets Authority report found so-called 'deals' could leave shoppers confused. Asda is introducing new rules to make sure multi-buy deals are not more expensive than a single product would have been before the offer.
And discounted products should not be advertised at a cut price for longer than the original high price lasted. The supermarket already ditched 133 multi-buy offers in February . The consumer group accused supermarkets of using deals to create the illusion of cheaper prices , when the products were actually more expensive.
A study by The Money Advice Service also found that three-quarters (76 per cent) of people regularly spend more than they meant to in the supermarket due to the deals. The CMA found supermarkets took consumer law seriously, but ‘was… now…’ and multi-buy deals could confuse shoppers. Asda boss Andy Clarke, said: “We’re pleased that the CMA has today recognised that we take pricing compliance seriously. “All supermarkets were asked to review their pricing practices and make any necessary changes. The CMA has asked for a commitment from Asda on our promotional pricing rules and we were happy to provide this. “It’s important that customers know that the CMA did not make any findings against Asda and it hasn’t questioned our commitment to every day low prices.” Cheapest per bottle (excl delivery) Cheapest per case (incl delivery) Wine shops can manipulate discounts so a big reduction doesn't equal the market's cheapest.
